....had a lovely day in York yesterday - a kind of birthday day out for Pheobe....took 5 of her friends too ! we all went on the train, looked around some shops, went to see the big Hockney painting of trees at the art gallery, walked around some of the City wall & then had pizza for tea....
today is pheobe's birthday ! I spent yesterday evening & this morning making her card & wrapping paper from sheets of white paper, collaged with pictures of landscapes, trees, flowers, shells etc from old ladybird books, some tea-cards & a victorian flower album....it is a treasure in my life to do this - how amazing to have the opportunity to make Pheobe smile !

well, i've not posted as much here recently - not because days aren't still full of little treasures, especially those I spend with my daughter Pheobe. The truth is that i've been working on a few projects & also focusing on working through some things - which in itself is part of life's tapestry....I haven't taken many photographs recently but have found some fantastic images whilst putting together the free monthly pdf arts magazine I publish - tristesse engraved (click to go to the new tumblr page with links to each issue)....here are a few from forthcoming issues....
I've been having some really vivid dreams recently. I had one last night that has left a warm feeling, all be it tempered by some sense of things past. In the dream I was at some kind of event & was having a friendly chat with a friend (male) & one of their friends (female). Later I found that a greetings card I had with me had some small writing in one corner. I forget now what it said but it was nice & had been written by the female. The crux of this dream was in the understanding of those words - it was somehow communicated that the person who had written them was honest, caring, gentle & her feelings for me were deep & life enhancing for both herself & me.
I woke with a feeling as if it had actually happened & it conjured up feelings of opening landscapes ahead that come with love.
I have a wonderful life in so many different ways. I confess though that I would like to feel those feelings again. To hold someone close, in thought & deed. For it t…

today began by watching Pheobe compete in the 800m county championship - she was leading all the way & then in the last 100m the girl behind her caught up & pipped her to the post by o.o1 of a second ! Pheobe got a silver medal though & did quite well in the long jump too....then we watched a bit more of the old 'famous five' film series recently re-issued by BFI....& then we made sushi ! which turned out quite (see blurry photo above)....

last night whilst eating treacle sponge (with a bit of cream too !) me & Pheobe watched one of the old Famous Five series that has been reissued by the BFI on dvd....it was very funny ! & how interesting to see the differences in behaviour between 1957 & now....

yesterday morning I prepared a recipe from Antonio Carluccio's 'complete italian food' (a great cookbook - this one was a present to my mum) for my & Pheobe's tea. There is a simple pleasure in preparing good food for the people you love....
after frying small pieces of sweet cured bacon & small pork sausages in olive oil I added some good fruity red wine & watched it bubble till almost totally evaporated. Next adding garlic, rosemary, chopped onion & dried chilli - then, after a few minutes, tomato pulp. Into the slow cooker it went....
After collecting Pheobe from school I prepared the accompaniment - polenta (yellow) with gran padano cheese & butter....using the polenta me & Pheobe bought in Venice....we also bought some white polenta there & will have to use that next time - we did look up the difference between white & yellow but couldn't find any ! (side note: I have been using some of this polenta, uncooked, in live performance…
choosing a book of poetry from my shelves - this egg yolk coloured book 'Sundowner' by Phoebe Hesketh sticks out, just behind a pebble with googly eyes stuck on & a small white one that I drew a picture of a girl holding an ice cream on (for my daughter Pheobe)....this small moment of memory & warmth is poetry in itself....
'Partridge'
She was round and warm and brown, homely and soft as a fresh cob loaf. She nestled you to comfort from stings of nettles, thistles, and wasp-thin tongues. One could feel her feathering her eggs, folding them under her breast, shuffling her wings till all were safely gathered.
Her warmth of welcome shone across a field; you came to her out of the rain; the wind lay down when she was near. Sorrow that dropped from you was dried, and laughter shook easily as ears of corn.
I never heard her sing; her song was herself.
